FRANCISCO LOZA
Artist – Educator – Collaborator with Huichol Artisans
LOZA conducts demonstrations and workshops on Arte en Estambre, or Pressed Yarn Technique. LOZA creates his original art by working on wood surfaces covered in two types of wax onto which he presses threads one-by-one into intricate designs to create original and 3-D mixed-media artwork.
LOZA artwork reflects a range of themes, including his interpretations of Huichol spirituality, abstract mixed-media pieces with beads, Mexican cultural traditions, and contemporary themes focused on immigration and nature.
LOZA has over two decades of experience collaborating with Huichol artisans in Nayarit and Jalisco, Mexico, and he has conducted workshops at venues in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
During his tenure at Creative Alliance as Artist-in-Residence, LOZA directed special events with Huichol Shamans and artisans in Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and Ohio: (2009-2015).
LOZA has also conducted workshops for students and teachers at Walter’s Art Museum, American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM), and public schools in Baltimore and Winston-Salem, NC. He led workshops for art students from UMBC at Creative Alliance, and workshops with students of all ages at Baltimore Public Schools and Enoch Pratt Libraries (2010-2016).
As Artist-in-Residence at Creative Alliance, LOZA created the “Songs on the Wind” exhibit to showcase cultural traditions of Huichol artists. Joint-Show with Gale Jamieson, BMORE, MD April-May 2010
2015 to present:
LOZA continues to conduct workshops to demonstrate the intricate pressed yarn technique—Arte en Estambre. and share his visions of contemporary, abstract, and traditional themes in his original artwork. LOZA shares his work at events and upon request at his new gallery/studio space in Baltimore, MD.
